NRTI as we knew it is no more, and I don't know what will happen in the future. Technically, I'm still employed by the College, though am enjoying a paid hiatus, and working on everything I couldn't work on when I was spending 70 hours a week running the Program, like cleaning up from the tornado that hit, what, 7 years ago now? I'm also commissioned with a nearby county agency, actually answering to one of the more popular instructors, so I'm still trying to keep my hand in.

I'll continue to post information and news from grads and friends, and also want to keep current with LE news and references.

My College phone and e-mail are pretty much out of service, so I'll be setting up yet another account , so we can stay in touch.

Wanted Man Commits Suicide In Park

I usually avoid snide remarks in cases like this - it is by no means unusual for sex offenders to punch their own tickets.  But who ties a rope to a belt to make a noose?  I haven't heard of that before, maybe the branches were out of reach, or, more likely, he had a history of autoerotic axphyxiation.  In those cases I ALWAYS made snide comments, until my childhood hero, Kwai Chang Kane, tied his knot wrong.

Wanted Man Commits Suicide In Park

Rangers on patrol in the Buttermilk Falls area of the park just before midnight on Sunday came upon a white Ford Ranger pickup parked in the falls parking lot, which closes to public use at 10 p.m. When they approached the vehicle, they saw a rope hanging from a large tree limb toward one side of the truck’s rear. Behind the truck, they discovered a man’s body with the rope tied to a belt around his neck. The New Jersey State Police and the state medical examiner’s office were notified and joined the investigation. A records search revealed that the 32-year-old man had an outstanding felony warrant for child molestation and child pornography out against him, extraditable in all 50 states.

AMISTAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA
On February 15th, Eladio Pena of Roma, Texas, was sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for his role in a cartel drug smuggling operation through Amistad NRA. Rangers began investigating this case in 2006 and were soon joined by other federal and state agencies. Pena admitted by pleading guilty that he was a key player in the cartel drug trafficking operation that imported over 10,000 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico across Lake Amistad between 2006 and 2008. The drugs were smuggled in boats through the park and then stored in a warehouse in nearby Del Rio. The drugs were then transported in false compartments in flatbed trailers of 18-wheeler trucks and taken to Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, and North Carolina. The cartel transported back to Mexico over $60 million in drug proceeds.

FOCUS would remove some of the key elements of the Lacey Act, and could result in the disarming of USFWS LEOs. It's nowhere near law, but highly dumb nonetheless.

Energy drinks and supplements can be very popular with Academy students, but they are no substitute for good nutrition, hydration, rest and exercise. Nothing is free, particularly at $3.50 a can or whatever it costs. Too much of these types of supplements can have side effects ranging from unpleasant to unknown.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
Missing Woman Rescued From Backcountry

Late on Saturday evening, rangers learned that a 54-year-old Estes Park woman had not returned from a day trip into the park. A family member found her car at the Bear Lake parking lot and rangers responded. They were at the scene until after midnight but were unable to determine whether she had gone hiking or snowshoeing in the park. Early on Sunday morning, rangers searched the Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lake areas as well as trails leading to Odessa Lake. The woman was found around 10 a.m. roughly three miles up the summer trail to Odessa Lake on the north side of Flattop Mountain. She was breathing but was unconscious and unresponsive.  St. Anthony Flight for Life landed in the area within the hour and she was flown to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

Visitor Dies While Snowshoeing In Park

The Grand County Sheriff’s Department received a cell phone call on Saturday afternoon reporting that a 64-year-old man who’d been snowshoeing with a family member in the park had collapsed and was unconscious and not breathing. They were about a third of a mile from the Green Mountain trailhead when the incident occurred. Rangers and area emergency service personnel responded, reaching the man within minutes. They provided advanced medical care but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Uncut: Indianapolis Officer Surrenders after Standoff - News - LawOfficer.com

Not exactly the most stellar arrest techniques I've seen, but I suppose it beats running across the field and pig-piling the guy. For all the use they got out of the armored vehicle, they might as well have used an Econoline, but then the one guy couldn't had laid his AR on the fender and walked away. I wonder how long it took him to realize somebody had glommed onto his rifle, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the other officer told him that he'd secure it.

I suppose though, that if the guy had flipped and started shooting, the rounds would have been contained in the rig, which would protect the neighborhood from everyone but the SWATters, but which sucks if you are the guy in the hatch - they'd be incoming at about ball height.

Hamilton County Parks, PT Commissioned Ranger

Detailed Announcement
Jobs Page

Winton Woods, where I launched my meteoric career in land & resource management.  And lasted one season.  And got poison ivy.  And sunburned. Both. A lot.  And attacked by a toy poodle.  And peeled the magnetic markings off of the Chief's car and put them back on upside down.  I'm pretty sure he is retired by now, and the statute of limitations has got to be up.

If you get on there, as NRTI grads have done in the past, don't embarrass me with those sorts of juvenile shenanigans.  Make up your own shenanigans.  On second thought, just behave like the consummate professional you have been carefully molded into being.

I could have never been a rescue swimmer because I can barely survive taking a shower, and I'm afraid of sea monsters.  And drowning.

The FLETC pool has some stuff, like a helo dunker and some hoisting rigs, presumably for their Air & Marine students, but no tsunami simulators I could see.

Three Colo. Cadets Hospitalized After Training - Officer.com

Ammunition Malfunction Notice Issued

Ammunition Malfunction Notice Issued
From NPS News:
During firearms training at a park on February 8th, a round malfunctioned, resulting in a fragment of the bullet embedding itself in the thumb of the ranger next to the shooter.
The cause of the round fragmenting is uncertain but the incident has been reported to the ammunition company.  The ranger received three stitches in his thumb but is otherwise fine.
The ammunition is Winchester Ranger RA9T 9mm 147 grain T-series, lot number 30EG81. The lot number is ink-stamped on the inside of the right tuck flap on 20-round boxes, and ink stamped on the end of the cardboard cases.

Bill's Note: The search function on the Winchester website wasn't working, so I don't know exactly which load this is.  Details are skimpy, but unless there was a void in the bullet when it was cast or formed I can't imagine why it would go all grenade right at the muzzle, and I have never heard of that happening.  On the other hand, if the pistol unlocked prematurely, a blown case could easily shred and knife into someone else on the line.

Now we'll all have to wear Kevlar thumb cozies.  Even on good days at the range, it's always the thumbs that suffer.

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK: Motorcyclist Killed In Head-On Collision

From NPS Incidents:
On the afternoon of February 10th, a Harley Davidson collided head-on with a pickup truck on Sandario Road, killing the motorcycle’s operator, a 36-year-old airman from Davis Monthan Air Force Base. He was heading northbound on the road when he drifted into oncoming traffic and collided with the southbound pickup. Picture Rocks Fire Department paramedics conducted CPR at the scene before the man was flown by Lifenet helicopter to University Medical Center trauma unit, where he was pronounced dead. The elderly couple in the truck were taken by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the lead investigation.

People Need to Chill

Yeah, its weird, but it also has the makings of a perfect trunk or travel rifle.  I wouldn't have designed it exactly that way, but the concept has merit, particularly in those areas that aren't AR or AK friendly, or for noncommissioned normal humans who might have a hard time explaining why they have a SCAR Heavy in the trunk that got spotted while loading an arriving passenger's luggage at the airport.  People also forget that the purpose of a collapsing stock isn't to look cool, it's so that the weapon can be shortened up for storage and extended to fit the shooter for a specific stock weld, enabling consistent accuracy.  At least one of the rails needed to be on top of the receiver, if not extended over the barrel, for optics, and the rest could be an inch or so long; that's all that's needed for a light.

The only thing actually worth yowling about are the sights - Mossberg could have pulled the serviceable-if-not-sexy ghost rings off of one of their shotguns and stuck them on.

CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK: Vandals Pay Over $6 Thousand For Site Restoration

Capitol Reef is on my must-visit list.  I had the chance to drive through it once, but didn't have time to visit.  What I saw from the road was spectacular, I can only imagine what the backcountry must be like.  It also illustrates how Facebook is a good way to track idiots.
Vandals Pay Over $6 Thousand For Site Restoration
From NPS Incidents:
"In August, 2010, rangers discovered that vandalism had occurred at an archeological site in the park where historic signatures had been inscribed by famous western personalities Butch Cassidy, Matt Warner, and Silvertip. The recently inscribed names of at least eight individuals, along with the year 2010, were etched into the walls of the alcove near the historic inscriptions. By investigating Facebook postings, rangers were able to identify the responsible individuals as a result of information that they had posted about their recent family reunion in the park. Once identified, members of the group took full responsibility. They paid a total of $6,045 for site restoration under the authority provided by the Park System Resource Protection Act (16USC 19jj). Professional restoration of the site will commence this year. Ranger Brenda Zirwas was the case ranger."

Dog attack injures officer | The Marion Star | marionstar.com

Last night's late news reported that the copper was out of surgery and doing well. The force in a Pit's or Rottweiler's bite is astronomical. He probably suffered a lot of crushing injury to bones, muscles and blood vessels. Criminals don't worry about training a dog to release on command, the way a K9 will, so blasting it off you is probably the safest route. Unfortunately, you need to get bullets into the brain, and when the dog's face is full of you that can be tough. The only upside to this story is that apparently this dog hadn't been trained to go straight for the crotch, as some have.

Why Motor Cops Should Wear a Full-Face Helmet - Vehicles - POLICE Magazine

Having BTDT, I could not agree more. I wish that the models with the full-flip-up face section had been available when I rode, it would have made life with glasses a lot more convenient. But I really have no interest in making a lot of money for some maxillo-facial surgeon, nor in swallowing and subsequently defecating my own teeth and jawbone fragments.

Why Motor Cops Should Wear a Full-Face Helmet - Vehicles - POLICE Magazine

It does heighten the issue of helmet-removal protocols, but that's primarily for the medics to deal with. There are some tools on the market, including something like an airbag. for removing helmets from downed riders, but I wouldn't mess with it. When I took the Big Hit I distinctly remember holding down the chin piece of my bone dome with both hands ( I couldn't lift them any farther) and screaming at people to not touch my head so that no well-intentioned onlooker did something that would result in me steering a powered wheelchair with a puff tube for the rest of my life.
