I just picked up a pair of Petzl Caritools, one in large and one in humongous, and am convinced that there is a plot to kill me by tricking me into clipping onto a rope with the wrong piece of hardware. Between them and the S-Biners and Maxpedition plastic links, I've got more non-life-support-worthy connectors than actual carabiners. But the Caritools may actually work pretty well. The large one in particular is probably big enough to hold serious tools like cordless drills, personal size entry tools, hearing protection, coiled cording, and such. The smaller one is just smaller, but still plenty big. There is a slot for a belt that when used will prevent it from rotating flat against the body, but so fair mine has resisted every effort to get a belt through it. They use a wire gate, which in my opinion would benefit from having a deeper slot to close into. The lanyard loop included on the upper portion of the body is brilliant.
The smaller one cost me a little under 6 bucks, but the larger one was around 15. I'm not sure why there is such a disparity in price, and the smaller one will see more day to day use. I understand that it is an unwritten law that all LE gear be black, but as I've mentioned before, if there is any chance that these will be in proximity to actual, for-real loadbearing life critical equipment and situations, they need to be distinctively marked so that there aren't any mistakes.
Contact Information
NRTI as we knew it is no more, and I don't know what will happen in the future. Technically, I'm still employed by the College, though am enjoying a paid hiatus, and working on everything I couldn't work on when I was spending 70 hours a week running the Program, like cleaning up from the tornado that hit, what, 7 years ago now? I'm also commissioned with a nearby county agency, actually answering to one of the more popular instructors, so I'm still trying to keep my hand in.
I'll continue to post information and news from grads and friends, and also want to keep current with LE news and references.
My College phone and e-mail are pretty much out of service, so I'll be setting up yet another account , so we can stay in touch.
